The oldest alumni polo match in the U.S. is back!  The annual Harriman Cup returns to New York this Fall.

After a three year intermission due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Harriman Cup is back! The 36th Annual Harriman Cup Polo Match between alumni from Yale and the University of Virginia will take place on Saturday, September 9th, 2023 at Meadow Brook Polo Club's Bethpage Polo Field in Bethpage, NY.  For over three decades, The Harriman Cup has commemorated the life of diplomat, polo player, and former New York Governor Averell Harriman. 

 

The Harriman Cup is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the sport of polo and supporting the collegiate polo programs at Yale and UVa. The Harriman Cup charity polo match has been held every year since 1985, with the exception of the pandemic years. The organization has raised over $1 million for the schools’ undergraduate polo teams. The Harriman Cup is active throughout the year and sponsors other events. The Harriman Cup was founded in 1984 by Tom Shuman, Zene Colt, Dick Cawley, Mike McGhee, Mike Schram, Molly Baldrige, Bill Ylvisaker, Lou Lopez, Steve Orthwein, Sandy Carden, and John Harris, Jr.   To learn more about the rich history of the Harriman Cup, please click here.

As the oldest team sport at Yale, and one of the oldest collegiate polo programs in the United States, Yale Polo builds on a history of polo at Yale since 1874. Today, Yale Polo is an independent 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization and a vibrant club hosting intercollegiate, interscholastic, and community club polo leagues at its new facility.

Established in 1953, the Virginia Polo Club is a student organization for beginning and experienced polo players alike, with a long record of outstanding achievments! Club members participate in co-ed scrimmages, tournaments, and intercollegiate polo competitions. Virginia Polo fields Men's and Women's Varsity teams and a high school team.
